As a Sophomore at Baylor university, I know I could not have picked a place more suited to preparing me for my future.
I am in an honors program called the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core, or the BIC. The BIC combines general requirement classes for a more well-rounded and discussion based education. For example: instead of taking an English class, a speech class, and a history class, I took World of Rhetoric. The class combined philosophies from Socrates and Aristotle while teaching modern writing and speaking methods. BIC has taught me to clearly articulate my opinion in such topics as religion, philosophy, and politics, while still clearly appreciating the opinions of my classmates.
Baylor also prides itself on its study abroad options. I am currently spending a semester in Santander, Spain. As a Spanish major, studying abroad was very important to me. I am also a pre-Physical therapy, and Baylor has worked with me so that I will study abroad and still finish my prerequisites for PT school. Many friends of mine have been able to study abroad in places not directly related to their area of study. While abroad, Baylor constantly sends emails checking on my wellbeing and reminding me that I am missed in Texas. Baylor University truly is a family.
When I arrived at Baylor, I had no idea what I wanted to do in my future. Baylor offers “Career Services” which is a program where the student goes for three appointments with a psychologist. The students takes the Meyers-Briggs assessment, as well as other personality and career assessments. Thanks to the career services program I found that my passions for helping people and the Spanish language could be easily combined.
As a private Christian University, one would think that Baylor pushes a specific dogma on its student population. As a freshman, I did take Chapel; many of my friends were required to take Christian Scriptures. However, we are also required to take a world-religions class, and a theological history class. My two favorite professors at Baylor subscribe to Islam and Atheism. I have never questioned my faith as much as I have at Baylor University, and no matter what religion or mindset one subscribes too, examining and understand what and why you believe is never a bad thing.
I can’t talk about the greatness of Baylor without mentioning the School’s pride and our university activities. Homecoming at Baylor is an event not to be missed. A huge bonfire and parade might seem typical of all Universities, but the student involvement at Baylor is truly magnificent. Baylor also has a program called “Christmas on Fifth” where the entire university gathers for camel rides, music, food, and remembering how lucky we are. In the Spring Baylor celebrates “Diadeloso”, a day when classes are canceled and students are allowed time to relax before final exams.
There are so many reasons I love Baylor University: my friends, my academics, and my opportunities are only a few. Baylor has become my family, and I know there is no other University which could have pushed me so hard, while holding me up all the while.
